October 2159: A Denobulan science team mapping a nearby star system have made an astounding discovery. While exploring a fridged moon orbiting a Class 9 gas giant, they encountered primitive aquatic ecosystems living around the ocean's deep hydrothermal vents.

June 2160: A comet is passing unnervingly close to the gas giant. The small moon only possesses a thin atmosphere, entirely created and maintained by its own geysers, so the moon would be completely devastated by an impact. In the interest of preserving the primitive ecosystems for further study, United Earth Starfleet has sent NX-06 to guarantee the comet doesn't impact the moon, even if that should require sending the comet into the gas giant.
